How much do your paintings cost?
I have a selection of original oil paintings here on the website. Prices are displayed, starting from £280.00 up to £1,800.00. My paintings are generally priced on a size basis as well as framed/unframed etc.
I also have some pieces that are available as prints from the original artwork. These are marked as ‘Prints Available’ next to the original listing.
Simply message me on the CONTACT page, naming the piece you are interested in and I can let you know what print sizes are available at the time.
Limited Edition prints are also available.
On the sister website to this one: chrisgillgallery.com you can find a selection of print collections. From there I occasionally run an offer for a free A5 print so be sure to check that out. Prints start from as little as £16.99.
Do you have a shop or studio on the high street where I can view your works?
No. I have a home based studio which is not open to the public and I wouldn’t want the costs of a shop to impact the prices of my work, so choose not to go down that road.
Do you have your work available in high street galleries?
No. I prefer not to be limited by a gallery owner who only wants a certain type of work according to their personal preferences and opinions. I also prefer to sell my work at a reasonable price, rather than having to inflate the price of my work by sometimes as much as (if not more than) 50% in order to cover what the gallery takes from me as an artist in commissions.
Do you ‘do’ exhibitions?
Occasionally. Sometimes I work with other artists to put on joint exhibitions and have exhibited in the past in local art shows and Art Society shows.
If I have one coming up I will post it in the Blog or on my FB Page.
Can I arrange to view Original Oil Paintings that I wish to purchase.
Yes. I offer a guarantee with my original paintings that are purchased from the website. You can find out how this works here: ORDERING ARTWORK
If you have a piece you are interested in and you are in or around North Devon (perhaps on a holiday or short break) I am always happy to arrange a meeting where the work can be viewed in person.
Please join my email list (below) to be kept up to date with the latest work releases.
Do you paint commissions?
I do. This is on the proviso that I like the subject :-)
How long does it take you to complete a painting?
This varies enormously and depends on variables such as size, weather and style of piece. Painting outdoors in the right conditions can allow me to get a 12’’ x 16’’ panel done in 2 to 6 hours. A small still life can be around 4 to 6 hours. A large, more realistic interpretation of a landscape or coastal scene such as a harbour, with much more detail, can take weeks, months, and yes, even years of sittings to finally say it’s finished.
In general though, I try to limit my time on a piece to a maximum of 12 hours worth of sittings for even the largest work.
In addition I use:
Mediums:
Pebeo Studio Gesso
Gamblin Alkyd Lite
Gamblin Gamsol
Winsor & Newton Liquid Original
Jacksons Fast Drying Medium
C Roberson & Co. Damar Retouching Varnish

What materials do you use in your work?
I paint in oils and use either stretched canvas or artist boards as my main supports (painting surfaces).
I prepare my supports with gesso and acrylic coloured ground depending on the scene.
Brushes
I prefer to use all synthetic brushes. I don’t want an animal to be exploited so I can paint a picture.
Pro Arte synthetic hogs for sky, sea and fields
Daler synthetic flats for blocking in
Rosemary & Co. Classic filberts, selection rounds, swords, daggers and riggers for everything else

Easels and Prints
In the studio I use a large frame studio easel or a desk mounted H frame easel. Out and about I use an old Reeves full box easel. Occasionally I use a pochard box made for my mum by my dad.
Prints are offered on the sister website at chrisgillgallery.com
There are also certain original paintings that have prints available on this website although the original painting has been sold. These are noted against the works on the ORIGINAL ARTWORKS page.

Oil Paints
I mostly use Michael Harding handmade artists oil colours, Old Holland and Jacksons Artist Oil Colours as well as some Winsor & Newton colours.
I use these paints in the studio and outdoors.
