I paint mostly in oils. The oil paintings are usually begun in 'the field' (en plein air) and often finished in the studio, if weather conditions don't allow a complete, 'at the first go' (alla prima) finish.
The spontaneity of alla prima painting is deeply satisfying, and, seems to allow a transference of the excitement and enthusiasm the painter feels on discovering his subject outdoors, to the viewer. The vagaries of the English climate, however, make this approach a little hit and miss! So a compromise between 'on the spot' completion, and, a capture of the essential elements, then a finish in the studio, is often necessary.
'Onshore Evening' is an example of the outdoor start, and, indoor finish. The distant weather that can just be noticed on the horizon, was about to be followed by another front. The beautiful coastline around Kingsbridge, and, Salcombe, in South Devon offers many opportunities for capturing dramatic weather against the coastline and land, but, the painter often has to be quick. The backdrop of Dartmoor, a short way inland, and, the meeting of land, and, sea, can often help to generate ever changing micro climates.
The challenge of painting in this stunning area, is more than outweighed by the variety of subject matter on offer.
I've added an image of the finished piece below and shot of the clouds nearby that inspired the colour theme.
